Tim's Story
Background Information
My name is Tim Harriman and I was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1988 into a loving family with two older brothers. I grew up in Airdrie playing hockey and many other sports. In junior high school I started mountain biking and I have since seriously taken up road biking. I am very involved with my church, as a junior high youth leader and for the past three years as a cabin counselor at Camp Chamisall. I recently completed high school and was giving the opportunity to graduate at two schools (Bert Church High School and George MacDougall High School) and was honored to be the guest speaker at my Graduation at George MacDougall.
My Journey with Cancer
In September 2002, at the age of 14, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a form of cancer in the blood common in children. To the shock of my family we were told that my prognosis was poor and I would need to undergo 2 ½ years of treatment. This included high dose chemotherapy and radiation. I was faced with some challenging decisions that made me question whether it was worth going through the treatments. With the support of my family, friends, church, s
chool and community, I found the determination to fight my cancer. At times I had to dig deep to find the strength and courage to continue. After nearly 3 years I have completed my treatments, which have been successful.
During my treatments and hospitalization I became more aware of the impact of cancer on children. When I was initially diagnosed I told my family that upon completion of treatment I wanted to cycle across Canada to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer. I am now focusing my energy on fulfilling this dream.
I hope you will join me on this journey!
